Daily Thoughts 07/08/2020

I checked the library Twitter and the Facebook group. I also checked my LinkedIn.

I finished reading How to be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi on the subway to work. It was worth reading. The content is very self reflective and personal. It focuses on internal change and eliminating internal hatred towards of different races and classes. At the same time it outwardly focuses on policy changes which affect how people are treated. There is a lot of history in the book about the origins and consequences of racism. I found it to be quite revealing. It aims for people to help eliminate racism from their internal dialogues. This includes unconscious racism.

I have been thinking it is time for me to try something else with a new blog. I am going to look at other platforms and focus a little more on things outside of work. I think I need a change. I will wind down by the end of the week and find a different place.

THE END IS NEAR.

Start over at the beginning.
https://startoverat.blogspot.com/

I decided today, 07/09/2020 would be the ending for this blog. It is time to try something else.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook Group. I also checked my LinkedIn.

I read some more of How to Be An Antiracist on the way to work. I am reading about the disparities in funding between traditionally black colleges and other colleges. Ibram X. Kendi is making the argument that funding is more important than integration in determining the success of schools.

There was a staff meeting today. We were discussing protective measures in the building against Covid 19.

I did a little more work with social media. I read through several copies of Booklist.

I also worked on my monthly report for June.
I read some more of How to Be An Antriacist on Overdrive. I am reading about how the ideas about racism which we have today are closely tied with the slave trade from Africa.

I spent some time talking to the Complete Count Committee for the City of Mount Vernon on Zoom. We had a meeting from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
I am at work right now. We are starting curbside assistance for items in the library.

I finished reading The US Armed Forces Officer Essays on Leadership, Command, Oath, and Service Identity by Richard M. Swain and Albert C. Pierce. This is an excellent overview of the moral and ethical underpinnings of the United States military foces.

I read some more of How To Be An Antiracist. I am reading about Ibram X. Kendi's parents.
I contacted a few people about a part-time position with the Complete Count Committee of the City of Mount Vernon, New York. There is going to be phone banking for the census for the City of Mount Vernon. To register go to bit.ly/2Z8cPNj The time is from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 8, 2020. We are also meeting on Monday to pick up tablets for the census.

There is also a DJ tonight from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for the census, DJ X-Factor, on the Mount Vernon, New York Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/mountvernonny/

There is a plan to make a community garden at the library. We are going to be seeking volunteers and equipment for the library.

I read the book, The Network Effect by Martha Wells which is about a rogue cyborg security unit. It is entertaining science fiction. There are a lot of ideas about hacking and computers in this story combined with action and intrigue. It is the fifth book in the series. I have liked reading all the books in the series.
Daily Thoughts 06/18/2020

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook Group this morning. I also checked my LinkedIn. My colleague has taken over the Facebook page.

I started reading The US Armed Forces Officer Essays on Leadership, Command, Oath, and Service Identity by Richard M. Swain and Albert C. Pierce. I am reading about what it means to be a professional soldier. The initial focus on this book is about what it means morally and ethically to be a soldier.

I watched another episode of Chemistry and Our Universe on Kanopy.

I am thinking about Read Squared and how we would do a virtual summer reading program. Read Squared also has a mobile app in addition to their website.

I attended a webinar on the census this evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.<span style="background-color: white; color: #232333; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: center;">The Perfect Storm: COVID-19 and its Effects on the 2020 Census & Voter Engagement.
Daily Thoughts 06/16/2020

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook Group. I also checked my LinkedIn.

I finished reading LaGuardia last night written by Nnedi Okorafor, drawn by Tana Ford, colored by James Devlin, and lettered by Sal Cipriano. This is a beautifully put together graphic novel. The colors are striking and the lettering is wonderful. It has an interesting cast of humans and aliens. It mixes the setting of Nigeria and New York peopled with aliens and human beings. It is a story of conflict about alien immigration and visitation to earth. I like the symbolism and the relevance to the issues today about immigration. I also like the talking plant aliens. This book was a lot of fun to read. It is a science fiction graphic novel.

I also watched another episode of Chemistry In Our Universe on Kanopy. I am learning about large numbers as well as chemistry is primarily about very small parts of nature, atoms and molecules.

I spent a little time thinking about how we would do the Adult Summer Reading as an online program.
