On the way to work, I read some more of The Most Good You Can Do.  The author describes the concept of the "hedonic treadmill" where at a certain point, you won't be happy with increasing amounts of money.  Peter Singer describes how giving money can increase happiness when you have enough for yourself.  He also makes the argument that helping a poor person in a poor country has greater effect than helping a poor person in a rich country.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.




I checked the gift books and the displays.  I am working on an order of sports books.




I spent some time discussing future programs with a colleague.


I finished ordering some new sports books.


There is a class from 5:30p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for Basic Internet Security.  We also have Lashonda Keith Barnett is doing a lecture tonight called Sound The Trumpet Black History Through Jazz in the community room from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I read some more of On Her Own Ground on the way to work.  I am reading about Madam C.J. Walker's move to Harlem, New York.  She was one of the early members of the NAACP.

I read some more of The Most Good You Can Do as well.  I am reading about metacharities which track how well other charities do.

I checked the Twitter and Facebook pages for the library.

I checked the gift books and the displays.  I also did a little work with flyers.  I am watching the computer lab to make sure that the change hours works.

I spent some time working on Bookletters this morning.  I also did a little work on next weeks new book order.

I spent some time in the computer lab this afternoon. There is a Using Digital Media class tonight from 5;30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.  I spent some time discussing Facebook with a person who works for me in the computer lab.

I rested on the way to work.

I checked the gift books and the displays.  The latest copy of Bookpages came in for me to read.  I also have copy of the New York Times Book Review to read.  Also, the book, Weeding Library Collections, Library Weeding Methods by Stanley J. Slote came in for me to read.

I spent some time discussing scheduling today.

There is a Fundamentals of Computers Class today and a Beginning Microsoft Word class in the computer lab.

I am looking at the book, Drawing Blood by Molly Crabapple.  I checked it out from the library.  It looks very bohemian and risque.  I have a can of diet coke and I need to clean up my desk.  Sometimes life seems so absolutely ordinary.  I put my hat on so I can be ready to go in a few minutes.

 I read some more of On Her Own Ground.  It is interesting that Madam C.J. Walker adopted a young woman, Mae Walker,  because she had beautiful hair.  I rather liked the descriptions of Madam C.J. Walker visiting Haiti and Jamaica to sell her hair products.

I also read some more of The Most Good You Can Do.  Peter Singer makes an argument that you should earn as much money as you can so you can give more money away.  He gives several examples of people entering the finance and banking industry so they can give away their money.

I read some more of On Her Own Ground today.  I am reading about Madam C.J. Walker's philanthropic efforts including her donation to the YMCA and her contested relationship with Booker T. Washington.

I started reading The Most Good You Can Do How Effective Altruism Is Changing Ideas About Living Ethically by Peter Singer.  This book is about the most effective ways to give your time and money to help people.

I checked the libraries Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also read some more of On Her Own Ground.  I am reading about how Madam C.J. Walker would sell her product.   She would set herself up in a comfortable hotel in the town she visited then solicit the local black churches and fraternal organizations to do presentations.  This is a classic example of selling to who you know.  It is also an excellent of business success.  Part of the reason her product was so successful is that it was one of the few ways black women could make money at the time.  According to the book in the 1900s 90% of black women who worked were employed as domestic help.  The book has a set of black and white photographs many of which feature Madam C.J. Walker's products.  The author, A'leila Bundle is related to Madam C.J. Walker.
