Daily Thoughts 02/28/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of How Organizations Develop Activists this morning on the way to work.  The activism in this book is focused on volunteers.  It writes about the importance of giving step by step processes of engagement and leadership roles to volunteers.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I also worked on some shifting in the 900s.  I spent some time checking the oversize books.  I also looked at some books which needed mending.

I spent some time checking on database subscriptions this afternoon.

I read the latest copy of the New York Times Book Review.  I am also looking at the general exterior signage considerations in the Checklist of  Library Building Design Considerations, 6th Edition  by William W. Sannwald.

I read through December and January issues of Publishers Weekly.  I also read a copy of Booklist.  I have the latest Ingram Advance to go through as well.

There is an Introduction to HTML 5 and CSS 3 class today in the computer lab from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On the way home, I read some more of How Organizations Develop Activists.  In this study there are three focuses for activism, online activism, real world activism, and leadership development.

I checked out the book, Dawn of the New Everything Encounters With Reality and Virtual Reality by Jaron Lanier.  I enjoy Jaron Lanier's writing.  This is his autobiography.  It is quite eccentric.  The details are wonderful.  He designs and builds a dome house at age 13 with the help of his father and he raises goats to pay for college.  The book has an eclectic counter culture and radical technology feel to it.

Daily Thoughts 02/27/2018

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.

I rested on the way to work.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I have a stack of material to read including the New York Times Book Review, Book List, and Publishers Weekly.

There were three books waiting for me when I got in How Organizations Develop Activists Civic Associations and Leadership in the 21st Century by Hahrie Han, Restore and Rebalance Yoga for Deep Relaxation by Judith Hanson Lasater, PhD, PT, and Restorative Yoga Revised and Updated Reduce Stress, Gain Energy, and Find Balance by Ulrica Norberg.

I checked on the shifting in the 900s.

I am working on an order for new books for fiction and nonfiction.

The Crochet Group met today from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Fiction Room.

We had a speaker who talked about William Voris of Rye who was an African American businessman in Westchester county during the 19th century.

I started reading How Organizations Develop Activists on the way home.  I am reading about how organizations combine online activism with activism in the physical world to make them work better together.

Daily Thoughts 02/22/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I wrote a short post on tactics for a library vote for my class Winning Support and Influencing Communities for Library Funding.

I read part of an e-book from Baen books this afternoon.

I also watched a few more episodes of How to Boost Your Physical and Mental Energy.

I discovered that the documentary Google and the World Brain is available on Kanopy.  This documentary covers H.G. Wells idea of a universal world library. This book compares this idea of the Google Book Scanning Project to a Universal Digital Library.  I started watching the film.  This film touches on an attempt to digitize the Harvard library.

This film is about libraries and information.  It is about universal libraries.  It touches on the Library of Alexandria.  It also discusses Project Gutenberg as well as  the Internet Archive aims to digitize all the books in the world.

Jaron Lanier is interviewed in this movie.  Part of the message of this movie is a counter message against large corporations owning most of the worlds information.

What is interesting in this movie is that it interviews people from Japan, Germany, and France. There is a very different view presented from these countries on the Google Books Project.

There were so many people in this movie who had lots of significance to librarians like Robert Darnton.  The end of the film mentions the Digital Public Library of America.  This is worth watching if you are an information professional.

New York Sunday Journal, Ernest Haskell, 1896

Daily Thoughts 02/14/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I read some more of Why Comics?  Hillary Chute covers the best comics in different categories like Little Lulu for women's comics, Palestine by Joe Sacco for war comics, and Fun Home by Alison Bechdel for queer comics.  The writing is very clear.  This would be an excellent introduction for someone new to the graphic novel field who wanted to read comics as literature.  The book does not cover genre comics like mystery, romance, horror, and science fiction.

I also read a little bit more of Real Love.  There are meditative exercises on love at the end of each chapter.  This is the main reason I am reading the book.

I checked the gift books and the displays in the morning.

We finished shifting in the 800s and have started shifting in the 900s.  Also, I spent some time working with the oversize books.

Taking the Census, Francis William Edmonds, 1854

Daily Thoughts 02/10/2018

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.

I read some of Hilary Chute's Why Comics from Underground to Everywhere.  The book surprised me, there is a fairly explicit chapter on sex and comics in the book.  This includes coverage of Robert Crumb, Alison Bechdel, and the Tijuana Bibles (comics from the 1920s with popular cartoon characters engaged in sexual acts).  This is not something I expected.  The chapter describes issues with censorship and morality which were a little uncomfortable.  One of the selling points of underground comics is the willing to show things that are taboo.

Most of the book is fairly standard with discussion of Maus by Art Spiegelman, Death Ray by Daniel Clowes, and other standard alternative comics.  It is a well written general introduction.  This is definitely written for adults.

I read some of Real Love The Art of Mindful Connection by Sharon Salzberg.  This focuses on meta meditation which is a buddhist tradition.  However, this takes a more secular approach.  Another word for meta meditation is lovingkindness meditation.  It is about focusing on love and handling self criticism.  This book is a self help book.

I worked a little bit on my class, Winning Support and Influencing Communities for Library Funding.  I learned about Counter Messaging for negative messages and the Tully Message Box.

I checked the Twitter and Facebook this morning for the library.

On the way to work, I finished reading Rules for Radicals A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals by Saul D. Alinsky.  I rather like the sections on organizing and communicating with people.  I found some of the politics to be a little odd.  It is a classic for understanding political organizing.

I registered for the Google Small Business Round Table.  I am going for networking.  It is in the Professional Building in Mount Vernon, New York.  I am going on the 13th of February from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

I looked through books that needed mending or discarding today.  They were books that were damaged with missing pages, split spines, torn covers, and similar things.  Some of them I chose to replace.

I checked the New York Times Bestseller list and the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list.

I had my evaluation today for a step increase.

I checked out the book, Real Love The Art of Mindful Connection by Sharon Salzburg and the book, Why Comics From Underground to Everywhere by Hillary Chute.

Daily Thoughts 02/05/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of The Victory Lab.  I am reading about the first Obama presidential campaign which was data driven.  They did some surprising things like put ads in pennysavers and on public transportation.

I stayed home today.  I am getting over the flu right now.

I finished reading The Victory Lab The Secret Science of Winning Campaigns by Sasha Issenberg.  In the last part of the book, Sasha Issenberg describes the Obama campaign which was driven by lots of statistics and computer algorithms.  Everything was tested, the mail, the phone banks, air time, social media, and any way to get more to vote for Obama was used.  The goal was to get your people to come out and discourage the other side from voting.  There was lots of discussion of how to do outreach to young people and what would motivate people to vote.  This included negative messages, peer pressure, emotional appeals, as well as appeals to rationality.  This helped me understand how politics works on a much deeper level.

I read some more of Campaign Boot Camp 2.0. on Hoopla. There is a "public service fitness test" which helps clarify your values.  It is very hard to be a politician without clearly defined stances and values.

I checked the Purchase Alerts today for items that we do not own that are on hold.
