Daily Thoughts 09/30/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of The War On Normal People this morning.  I read about the concept of social money or social credits and time banking.  Time banking is where you volunteer to help different people in exchange for other peoples help. There was also a section on how capitalism should be more centered on people.

I have been using flash cards I created from the Beck Diet Plan.  They are reminders that I need to stay focused on what I am eating to lose weight.

I watched Five Fables An Enchanting Animated Series Depicting Aesop's Classic Fables which are translations of five of Robert Henyson's interpretation of Aesop's fables by Seamus Heaney the Scottish poet narrated by Billy Connelly.  It is a mix of animation and commentary on the fables.  There is a scholarly quality to the commentary.

I finished reading The War On Normal People The Truth About America's Disappearing Jobs and Why Universal Basic Income Is Our Future by Andrew Yang at the laundromat.  There is a section on why healthcare needs to be separated from jobs.  This includes an idea of having universal Medicare.  The final section is on how education needs to change.  Andrew Yang mentions Khan Academy in the final section.  This is a book that touches on many contemporary problems that affect our economy including excessive video game use, the opioid crisis, automation and jobs, and how ordinary people will need to have a different future than what is happening now.

I checked the purchase alerts for holds.

Daily Thoughts 09/29/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also looked up a little bit of information on library foundations.

Last night, I read some more of The War On Normal People.  I am reading about why we should have a Universal Basic Income.  I also read about some of the emerging problems that are tearing apart our economy.  The argument that men are often spending more time playing video games than working is presented as well as the increasing problems with opioid addiction.

I also started reading Palaces for the People.  This book is about social infrastructure, or public funded community spaces like parks, recreation centers, community centers, libraries, and senior centers.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

Last night I finished reading Calming Your Angry Mind.  I was reading about how anger destroyed connections between people.

I also read some more of The War On Normal People.  I am reading about how there is an increasing disconnect between the technology and financial industries in the United States and ordinary people.

I checked the displays and the gift books today.

I also checked the New York Times Bestseller List and the Publishers Weekly Bestseller List.

I spent some time working on a list of zero circulation oversize items.

I am working a little bit on shelf signage, creating a list call number ranges for signage.

Right now, I am at the public computer desk.

Daily Thoughts 09/27/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

Last night, I read some more of The War On Normal People.  I am reading about how automation will eliminate jobs.  As long as a job is repetitive, predictable, and standardized, it can be replaced by automation.  This includes jobs by clerks, financial analysts, librarians, telemarketers, doctors, lawyers, truck drivers, and a lot of other professions.  With self driving cars and trucks, entire industries will change and require less people.

I also read some more of Calming Your Angry Mind.  I am looking through some frequently asked questions about meditation.

I have been transferring some of my old files to an external hard drives for fliers.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I also spent some time discussing doing citizenship classes.

The book, Palaces for the People, How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life by Eric Klinenberg has come in for me to read.

I spent some time working on signage.

I also spent some time looking at oversize items with low circulation.

I also spent some time setting dates for a codrones class.

American text books of art education, title page 1875

Daily Thoughts 09/26/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Calming Your Angry Mind last night.  I am reading more about meditation and how it can be specifically focused to disperse thoughts of anger, vexing thoughts, aggravation, and irritation.

I read some of The War on Normal People.  Andrew Yang describes how businesses are focused on efficiency and if jobs are eliminated because of automation it is an efficient result.  Often automation is cheaper than higher wages.

I have been using flash cards from the Beck Diet Plan.  They have been helpful in my weight loss.  I also have been writing memory cards where I write down when I have a success with my diet.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I put in some orders for new books.

I worked on scheduling.

We are working on some final revisions for the Art Journaling class right now.  I also helped another person work on another grant for Arts Westchester.

I spent some time on the public computers.  I am in the computer lab right now.

Daily Thoughts 09/25/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I read some more of Calming Your Angry Mind.  I am reading about different exercises for compassion in meditation focusing on forgiveness, self-compassion, and anguish.

I also finished reading Star Trek Discovery Drastic Measures by Dayton Ward.  I enjoyed reading the book.  One of the differences I see between Star Trek Discovery and the older series is that there is much more internal conflict in the federation.  People don't always act like family and are not always considerate of each other.  This is very different from the old Star Trek and in some ways less appealing.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I also spent a little time checking for duplication in the fiction room.

I worked a little bit on scheduling.

I helped with a colleague with ordering some children's books from Rainbow Books.

I also sent a copy of the latest Arts Alive grant to a colleague.

I spent some time generating book lists from Blue Cloud Analytics for oversize books with low circulation.

I checked out the book, The War On Normal People The Truth About America's Disappearing Jobs and Why Universal Basic Income Is Our future by Andrew Yang

Daily Thoughts 09/23/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

Last night, I read some more of Drastic Measures.  I am reading about the search for Adrian Kodos who kills 4000 colonists on Tarsus IV to prevent mass starvation.  The food supply is being attacked by an alien fungus.  Captain Kirk is in this story as a teenager.  It is a mix of suspense, disaster story, and science fiction.

I also read some more of Calming Your Angry Mind.  I am reading about negativity bias and why thinking negative thoughts is often a survival trait.

I watched two episodes of Practicing Mindfulness: An Introduction to Medition Course from the Great Courses on Kanopy.  Each one was a few minutres more than half an hour.

I checked the purchase alerts for the library this evening.

Daily Thoughts 09/22/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I read some more of Drastic Measures.  It adds nicely to the Star Trek cannon.  The specific incident at the Tarsus IV Colony was mentioned in several of the television shows.

I decided to stop reading Aware The Science and Practice of Presence The Groundbreaking Meditation Practice by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D.

Instead, I started reading Calming Your Angry Mind, How Mindfulness and Compassion Can Free You From Anger and Bring Peace to Your Life by Jeffrey Brantley, M.D. and Barbara L. Frederickson, PHD. is a founding faculty member at the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program at Duke Integrative Medicine.  It is a practical book which gives an interesting approach to understanding anger.

Today is the Mount Vernon Public Library Comic Expo from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I also spent some time looking up grants for the library.

I worked on some orders for new books.

I went outside for lunch and purchased a chicken sandwich, a bottle of water, and some spicy fries from a food truck.  They were tasty.

I also bought a few comics from 2 for a $1 bins at some of the comic vendors including Monstress single issues, American Gods, and Faith. There were a lot of nice reading copies.

I spent some time working on ordering new travel books so we can update the travel section.

I worked a bit on scheduling as well.

I got to be normal man today.  I spent some time on the reference desk while people worked the convention.  At the end of the day, I took a little more of a break and had two hot dogs from a vending cart and bought a few more comics, including a comic from Oni Press called Voodoom.

Edwin Austin Abbey, In the Library, 1888

Daily Thoughts 09/21/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Aware.  There are parts of this book which I find a little bit odd.  The model of a wheel of awareness reminds me of a television dial or volume control in the way consciousness switches between different states.  I am not convinced by this model.  I like the way Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. breaks down meditation into three areas, focused attention, open awareness, and kindness meditation.

I relaxed on the way to work.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.  There are several displays up around the building for the Saturday, September 2, 2018 Comic Expo from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Cathy Webb, our community outreach person planned the Comic Expo.  It should be a fun event.  I will be there working at the reference desk which should be interesting. https://www.facebook.com/mvplcomicexpo/

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I did some checking for duplicate books and books which needed updating in the travel and computer sections.

We finished shifting in the oversize section today.

I was all over the building today.  I was in the computer lab, at the public computers and at my desk.

I have to work on some flyers and events.

I also have some scheduling to work on.

I set up the sign up sheets for the computer classes.

On the way home, I started reading Star Trek Discovery Drastic Measures. It is about a disaster on a Federation colony planet  where the food supply is destroyed by an alien fungus.  It is nice to read a bit of escapism.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

Last night on the way home, I finished reading The Journal Junkies Workshop Visual Ammunition for the Art Addict by Eric M. Scott and David R. Modler.  The last part had quite a bit about storytelling and writing.  It describes how to integrate the written word into art.  I found this to be an excellent overview of the art journaling process, something I am just learning about.

I also read some more of Awake.  I am reading about how the mind exists in relation to others.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I also did some shifting this morning.

I put in some orders for new books.

I checked out two Star Trek Discovery books, Drastic Measures by Dayton Ward and Desperate Hours by David Mack.

On the way to work, I read some of The Journal Junkies Workshop.  This is a basic overview of art journaling.  The beginning goes over different tools to use in an art journal.  I learned that art journals usually use 70lb bond paper to allow for mediums like acrylics, ink pens, and glue.

I also started reading Aware which is about a scientific approach to meditation focused on a concept called The Wheel of Awareness.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I also did a little shifting in the oversize books.

Last night, I watched The Real Story Pirates of the Caribbean which was produced for the Smithsonian Channel.  The story compared the Pirates of the Caribbean to real pirates.  It focused on the famous pirate Black Beard.  They were showing the underwater archaeology of the Queen Annes' Revenge which was Black Beard's ship.  It was a fun show to watch.

I read some of Bodyweight Strength Training 12 Weeks to Build Muscle and Burn Fat by Jay Cardiello this morning.

I watched Doctor Strange on DVD.  I liked it.  It was better than expected.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I started reading Journal Sparks Fire Up Your Creativity With Spontaneous Art , Wild Writing, and Inventive Thinking by Emily K. Neuberger last night.  It is a very quick read, because it is a book of different ideas which you can use in art journaling.  There are many two page suggestions on what you can do with an art journal.  This includes ideas about washi tape, collage, envelopes, using color, creating lists, photo albums, and other activities.  I put slips of paper next to the pages for ideas which I liked.  There are a lot of them.  The book has a very upbeat, colorful mood.

I took a look at my Politics and Partnerships class this morning online.

I took an hour long course called Grant Seeking for Libraries: Top 10 Practices for Foundation Funding.  It is a new class on Webjunction.

I watched an anime called Tales from Earthsea which is based on the Ursual LeGuin fantasy book series.  I found it to be very different than the books, but quite interesting.  It is a Studio Ghibli film.

Daily Thoughts 09/11/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Autonomy this morning.  I am reading about what happens when there is no longer a driver in commercial vehicles.  One of the things that happens is that there is not a need for a vehicle to stop for sleep, this extends the range of long haul trucks.  It also is cheaper because the steering mechanisms and cabs for people are removed.

I read some more of The Complete Beck Diet for Life as well.  I am writing response cards to different situations like weekend eating, eating at restaurants, and people offering you food.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I took a look at my online class, Politics and Partnerships.

I read some more of Autonomy.  I am reading about Chauffer project which Google did for self driving cars.  It was a secret project aimed at developing self driving cars for use on public roads.  There was a lot of mapping involved.

I also read some more of The Complete Beck Diet for Life.  I wrote a list of reasons why I would want to lose weight as an exercise.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I wrote my monthly report with statistics today.

I spent some time looking at the shelving.

I started working on Arts Alive Grant for 2018-2019.  I am looking at a series of workshops on journaling/ personal writing which includes art.  I checked out a number of books on journaling today.

Daily Thoughts 09/07/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I checked the New York Times Bestseller list and the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list.

I spent some time working on the public computers as well as in the computer lab.

I spent a little time working on ordering books.

I read some more of Autonomy on the way home.  I am reading about how Google became involved in self driving cars.  Many of the obstacles to achieving completely autonomous cars are software and programming problems, not hardware issues.  Also, Google spent a lot of time creating maps using cars taking panoramic photographs for Google Street View.

Doctor Syntax With the Bookseller, Thomas Rowlandson, 1813

Daily Thoughts 09/05/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading Crash Overdrive How Gamergate (Nearly) Destroyed My Life and How We Can Win the Fight Against Online Hate by Zoe Quinn.

I have started reading Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl.  It is a brutal account of the holocaust from the point of view of a Jewish psychiatrist in a concentration camp.  I finished reading it on the way to the Amazon Bookstore in the Time Warner Building.  The author uses his experience and observations to describe how people survive in the worst conditions if they can hold onto meaning and beliefs.  Victor Frankl is the creator of Logotherapy or psychiatric based treatment focused on creating meaning in a persons life.

Visiting The Amazon Store in the Time Warner Building.

I went to the Amazon Bookstore in the Time Warner Building.  The bookstore is on the third floor of the building.  I tried to buy a journal with cash and the cashier told me that they don't take cash, only credit cards and the Amazon App.  When I used my debit card, they identified me as an Amazon Prime member and told me that I could get discounts based on being an Amazon prime member.  I bought a 240 page blank journal for $7.88 which was an excellent price.

The front of the store had a section for the Kindle Paperwhite, The Kindle Fire, and the Amazon Echo.  I looked at them a little bit.  There were also some non-book items like cups and journals and similar things.

I found the layout of the store to be quite interesting.  It was not a large store.  All of the books, graphic novels, and magazines were presented face out.  There was a quote card with a rating on it of 4.0 stars or hire.  There were no books with less than this customer rating shown.  All of the quotes were from customers.  There were also a few cards with arrows which said if you like this then you will like this.  In addition there were shelf tags for certain sections in a particular area.  The graphic novels section had a manga tag and a Marvel tag.

The books seemed to be the core collection of what was selling the most online.  It was not diverse, it was very focused on what would sell immediately.  A lot of the books were classics that were repeat sellers.  The focus did not seem to be on the newest books, but on the books which people bought the most like Starship Troopers in science fiction, or How to Win Friends and Influence People in self help.  The exception seemed to be with items like the computer books and the cookbooks which were all very current.

I noticed that the shelves away from the walls had variable heights.  I think there were bookshelves with five shelves next to bookshelves with six shelves.  This gave a different appearance.  When I looked at the ceilings, there were cameras everywhere, LED lighting and track lighting which made the store very well lit.

The floors had a light beige carpeting.  There were single seat plush armchairs in a few corners of the store.

The staff was friendly, but not intrusive.  They asked me twice if I needed any help and I said no.

The aisles were not that wide.  I almost bumped into several people.  I will probable buy a few books which I saw at the bookstore as part of my next order.

On the way home, I read some of Autonomy The Quest to Build The Driverless Car-- And How It Will Reshape the World by Lawrence D. Burns and Christopher Shulg  Lawrence D. Burns posits that there are three things which are coming together for driverless cars, car sharing, electric cars, and autonomous driving car.

Daily Thoughts 09/03/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read a little bit more of Crash Override this morning.  I learned about revenge porn and SWATing and how they work.  There is some interesting commentary on diversity and how it is hard for people of color to protect themselves from online hatred.

I listened to another session of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy The Great Courses on Hoopla.  I ran out of the 10 sessions I can watch on Kanopy per month.  Each service which the library has has a different number of checkouts for materials.  On Hoopla, there are five checkouts per month.  There is a little bit of overlap between the services.  Sometimes, it can take a couple of months to watch or listen to a complete series because of these limitations.

I was checking on the status of a class I am taking called Politics and Networking starting on September 10, 2018.

Daily Thoughts 09/02/2018

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the Mount Vernon Public Library this morning.

I read some more of Crash Override.  I am reading about how Zoe Quinn started an organization called crash override to protect people from online harassement.  I am learning about how businesses do not always protect people from online harassement because of intimidation and other factors.

I finished reading Dot Journaling- A Practical Guide by Rachel Wilkerson Miller.  This is a short book, it is 90 pages and much of it is pictures.  It shows you how to organize your life while writing a journal.  There are yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily spreads which can be used to organize your time.  In addition there are descriptions of different ways to track your activities like dieting, finance, c or exercise.  At the same there are also lists of things like quotes, inspirational statements, meal plans, and other activities.

It also includes how to break your day apart to include both activities and daily writings.  This book is not so much an artistic journal guide, but a writing guide.  It still covers good pens, paper, post it notes, tape, and other things which you can use in a journal. This book was practical and useful.

I watched some more of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy The Great Courses on Hoopla.  I liked the content on medication management as well as how to create better habits for weight and health.

I checked the purchase alerts for items that were on hold.

Daily Thoughts 09/01/2018

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Crash Override this morning.  I am reading about how people dogpiled Zoe Quinn and acted as a mob to attack her.  She got calls at home, hateful email, hateful posts, and diatribes against her.  Zoe Quinn describes the process of being attacked online.  She also describes how this moved to hacking attacks and social engineering.  The hacking attacks got access to her email, social media and blog sites where impostors would post nasty things about her.  She describes how this escalated into the real world where she was doxed or had her personal information spread all over the internet.  This can be used to order all kinds of things, setup fake accounts, and even attack a person in the real world by filing false police reports and false personal ads.

I watched a few more episodes of Cognitive Behavior Therapy The Great Courses.  The episode I am watching on Hoopla now is on Positive Psychology which is about how to feel excellent.

I started reading Dot Journaling A Practical Guide by Rachel Wilkerson Miller.  It is an e-book on Hoopla.  There are quite a few different organizational layouts for journals in the e-book.  I also placed several books on journaling on hold for me to pick up when I get back grom
