Die Bauern und die Zeitung, Gemälde von Albert Anker, 1867

Daily Thoughts 07/28/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also finished reading The Origins of Scientific Thought by Giorgio De Santillana.  It covers how scientific thinking was created.  There are stories about how the Greeks borrowed from the Egyptians and the Babylonians.  Also how certain philosophies like Stoicism and Epicureanism helped create a scientific mindset.  I got to read about Lucretius and Democritis who are the first atomists.  I found the book quite interesting.  The main focus is on the Greeks.

I placed a hold on the book, 1177 B.C.: The Year That Civilization Collapsed by Eric H. Cline.

I watched the webinar, Promoting Library Card Sign Up Month (from inside and outside the library).

Daily Thoughts 07/24/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading The Climate Report The National Climate Assessment Impacts, Risks, and Adaptations in the United States.  This report explains what happens during climate change.  It changes it from an abstract idea to a description of how people are affected by the climate.  It details things like heatwaves, forest fires, coastal flooding, hurricanes, and other problems caused by changes in temperature.  It gave me a better understanding of the meaning of climate change over the long term.

Daily Thoughts 07/19/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I have been reading a book called Caveman Chemistry 28 Projects from the Creation of Fire to the Production of Plastics by Kevin M. Dunn.  It is a book about how people use chemistry to make basic things like plastic, ethanol, cleaning products, and other things. It is well written and gives an idea on how many every day things were created.

I also read another book called The Human Powered Home Choosing Muscles Over Motors by Tamara Dean.  This is a book about intermediate technology, sometimes called alternative technology.  It describes how to use different muscle powered machines for farming, cooking, and other activities.  A lot of this is based on the bicycle, the flywheel, and the hand crank.
