Daily Thoughts 12/29/2015

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning and yesterday.

I finished reading Petty: The Biography today.  I found the last part of the biography to be a little bit difficult because the author was writing about divorce and drug addiction.  Warren Zanes was also describing the inner struggles which Tom Petty was going through including depression.

It is a very solidly written book.  The photographs in the center of the book are high quality and the index at the end is useful.

I also finished watching Strategic Planning Fundamentals with Mike Figliuolo on Lynda.com.  I have been watching some Youtube videos of David Foster Wallace.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

Last night, I read some more of Petty: The Biography.  I am reading about when Tom Petty toured with Bob Dylan.  This influenced Petty to have his songs be more story focused.

I watched a bit of the dvd, The End of the Tour which is a film about the writer, David Foster Wallace who is most famous for writing Infinite Jest.

I watched some more of Strategic Planning Fundamentals with Mike Figliulo on Lynda.com.  One of the better things about Lynda.com is that the videos are very granular.  It starts with the overall title, then it is broken into sections, then each section is broken into very short segments of two to six minutes each.  This makes it easy to take your time watching the videos.  You can spend ten or fifteen or minutes a day and still get something out of the videos.

I read some more of Petty: The Biography yesterday.   I am reading about the collaboration between Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks.

I took a break for the holidays yesterday.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I looked through the Times Literary Supplement this morning.

I checked the New York Times Bestseller list and the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list this morning.

I hope you are enjoying your holiday.

I checked the library Facebook and Twitter this morning for the library.

I read some more of Petty the Biography.  After his second record with the Heartbreakers, Tom Petty declared bankruptcy to get out of a bad contract.  He wanted to collect more money for his third record for his band.  There is a record cycle where bands go on tour, then produce a new record, promote the record and get ready for the next tour.  This book has a nice set of photographs in the center of the book, many of them are in color.

I started watching a training video on Strategic Planning Fundamentals on Lynda.com.

Daily Thoughts 12/22/2015

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some of Petty The Biography by Warren Zanes.  Th;is is a book about Tom Petty, the rock star.  It is about growing up with a singular interest in music, and not being particular good at other things.  Tom Petty fails at being a groundskeeper, dish washer, funeral home worker and proves to have no interest in school.

His work is music and it is what keeps him going.  I learned that there was another book called Runnin' Down a Dream on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

I read through a copy of the New York Times Book Review and the latest Bookpage.  I spent some time on preparing orders for new books for next week.

I talked to a colleague about library statistics.  The statistics for 2014 for the Westchester Library System are available here.  http://www.westchesterlibraries.org/wp-content/files/pdfs/about-wls/WLS_ML_Statistics_2014.pdf

I spent some time working on scheduling for January.  I also scheduled myself to go to the New York Metropolitan Library Council council  on January 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. http://metro.org/events/695/   In addition to scheduling for programs, I spent some time working on the schedule for January and February adult computer classes.

I checked out the movie, The End of the Tour which is about the relationship between David Foster Wallace and the journalist David Lipsky.

I checked the displays and the gift books.
