Daily Thoughts 09/30/2016

Lydia Reading on a Divan, Mary Cassatt, 1880-1881
Daily Thoughts 09/30/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading 40+ New Revenue Sources for Libraries and Nonprofits by Edmund A. Rossman III.   I found the book to have some interesting ideals like doing art shows, sponsorships, crowdfunding, and naming rights.  At points I found it to be very commercial.  The idea of advertising in a library was a bit much for me.  The author introduces the concepts of how public broadcasting raises funds.  It will be a useful tool for understanding some ways to raise money which many libraries do not do.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I looked through the October Forecast from Baker and Taylor and a copy of Publishers Weekly.

There is a new librarian who is working with me.  She is ordering some material from Overdrive Advantage and 3M Cloud Library right now.

I am starting to weed the Holiday books today.

We are getting a color printer for the computer lab.

I spent some time discussing a budget for a computer grant.  I have to put together a budget for a grant for computers in my Grants and Fundraising class.

I started reading Jerusalem by Alan Moore.  It is as if Alan Moore took all the sparse wording he iused for his graphic novels and then poured the unused words into a giant book.  It is one of the most densely worded books I have ever read.  There is a tremendous amount of descriptive language.  The style is different than most writing I have read.  It is very direct in its approach.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I checked the displays and the gift books in the morning.  I also printed some flyers.  I spent some time revising a grant for the library in the afternoon.

We started working on creating a new list of shelf labels.  One of the people who reports to me is putting the holiday books in order.

The book, 40+ New Revenue Sources for Libraries and Nonprofits by Edmund A. Rossman III came in for me to read.

I also put out the latest copy of Bookpage.

I ordered some cookbooks as well.

I spent some time looking through the Times Literary Supplement, Bookpage, and the New York Review of Books.  I also looked through two copies of the New York Times Book Review.

There is a Microsoft Word class in the computer lab today from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Daily Thoughts 09/28/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading The Span of Empire by Eric Flint and David Carrico this morning.  It was the third part of a series.

I enjoyed reading part of Angel Catbird as well. There is a lot of tongue in cheek humor.  I like the character, Count Catula.  The evil villain is the boss rat.  The costumes for the characters look like they could have come out of cosplay from a science fiction convention.  Also, the book is full of house cat facts which adds to the story.

I checked the displays and the gift books today.

I spent some time talking about programs today with people.

I finished writing my Arts Alive Grant 2017 for a writing workshop.

There is a Beginning Wordpress class tonight from 5;30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Daily Thoughts 09/27/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I read some more of the book, Power.

I checked the gift books and the displays in the morning.

Two books came in for me to read, Angel Catbird, the graphic novel written by Margaret Atwood and The Span of Empire, a science fiction novel by Eric Flint and David Carrico.

I have a pile of material to go through, copies of the New York Times Book Review, the Times Literary Supplement, Forecast, and the New York Review of Books.

The crochet club was today from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We also had the Fundamentals of Computers Class and the Beginning Microsoft Word class tonight.

I am looking at a new book by Bruce Fabricant called Mount Vernon, NY Sports Champions Heroes & Legends.  It is quite an interesting piece of local history.

My desk is exploding with paper.

On the way home, I finished reading Power-- Why Some People Have It-- And Others Don't by Jeffrey Pfeffer.  This book is about managing people in difficult situtions.  It describes how to deal with conflict in leadership.  It does not shy from describing the realities of office politics and the desires of people who want to get ahead.  Some of the content is surprising.  It is not about how to grab what you want, but how to build alliances, gather resources, network with your peers, pay attention, and do the little things which people often overlook.

I also read a large chunk of the book, The Span of Empire by Eric Flint and David Carrico.  I had already read the first 25 chapters of the book on the Baen website. http://www.baen.com/Chapters/9781476781532/9781476781532.htm?blurb

I spent a little time looking over the Arts Alive Grant for grammar and punctuation.

I read a science fiction graphic novel on Hoopla today called Cluster by Ed Brisson, illustrated by Damien Courciero. It had some very interesting concepts.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook.

I am home right now resting.  I read some more of Power.  It is an interesting book.  Jeffrey Pfeffer tells you it is important to have good manners, be helpful, and build up the resources that other people need to have.  The more resources that you have to offer the more people will come to you.  He also says that is more important to start in a line job where you interact with lots of people than to start as an administrator.  Helping people with little things that people perceive as important moves you forward.  The book is not always intuitive.

On the way to work, I started reading Power Why Some People Have It -- And Others Don't by Jeffrey Pfeffer.  This book describes the world as being unfair and politically driven.  It also has some counterintuitive ideas in it about self knowledge, focus, and leadership.

I listened to some podcasts on writing letters of inquiry for grants.  I also read two different articles on grant writing and looked at some sample letters.  I spent some time going through the Foundation Directory Online to identify a family foundation where I can send a query letter.  I think I am going to be ready soon.

I am listening to Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coeates as an electronic audiobook,  I already read the book in paper form.  It is a different experience.  It takes much longer and makes you listen to the whole thing.  This was umabridged version of the book read by the author, Ta-Nehisi Coates.  This gives a flavor to the text because it is the original author reading which makes it more understandable.

I placed the book The Span of Empire by Eric Flint and David Carrico on hold.

I started reading Paper Paging Through History by Mark Kurlansky.  We learn that paper was invented in China, then spread to Japan, then the Arabic countries.  This is a well designed book with nice end papers, quality paper, and excellent typography.  The book is printed by Quad Graphics in Fairfield, designed by Barbara Bachman, and the production manager is Julia Druskin.  The quality of the book makes it easier to read.

I started my class today for grant writing and fundraising.  I introduced myself and am working on a needs statement for the class.  I thought this list of grants was interesting.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I got my login for the Fundraising and Grantsmanship Class I am taking starting on September 5, 2016.

I finished reading Invisble Influence The Hidden Forces That Shape Behavior by Jonah Berger today.  It is about social influence and how it affects our decisions.  The author describes how we have a tendency to discount how others peoples decisions and actions change our own.  I thought the book was mildly entertaining.  There are notes and an index.

Daily Thoughts 09/02/2016

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.

On the way to work, I read some of Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.  The book is well written, short, and easy to read.  It helped me understand some things about African American history as well as the reason why so many African Americans spend time in Paris.  I especially liked the material on Howard University.

I checked the displays and gift books this morning.  I also checked on the computer lab.

I placed a small order with Davidson titles.  I also prepared an order of new books today.

I spent a little time updating Bookletters with some new titles for this month.

I printed up some more flyers to distribute.

I read some more of Invisible Influence on the way home.  I am reading about how social influence affects our decisions on things like energy efficiency and water use.  A lot of the material in this book is about advertising and corporate decisionmaking.  The book is very business oriented.

I finished reading Between the World and Me.  Although the book was about race, I found it also touched a lot on the personal meaning of history for the individual.  I thought the concept of the body as something which countries and civilization try to control could also be used to describe Rome and Egypt.

Daily Thoughts 09/01/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

Last night, I read some more of Invisible Influnce.  I am reading about how mimicry makes people like each other more.  On the train to work, I read about how people identify with different brands.

I checked the gift books and the displays.  I put out the latest copy of the Bookpage and read it.

Bruce Fabricant came by with his book, Mount Vernon, NY Sports Champions, Heroes, and Legends.  There is a very strong interest in sports in Mount Vernon.

I spent some time preparing materials for events in October.  I also took a look at the Arts Alive grant from Arts Westchester today.

There was a Beginning Microsoft Excel class today from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

I checked out the book, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates today.  We are reading it for our book club on September 29, 2016.  I also checked out the book, Paper Paging Through History by Mark Kurlansky.
