Daily Thoughts 06/05/2014

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I took some time to relax today.  I read The Sea Without A Shore by David Drake which is the latest book in the RCN Royal Cinnabar Navy series of military science fiction.  It was relaxing reading something for pure esccapism.  I rather like David Drake's writing.  He often uses history as a backdrop to his novels.

David Drake also adds additional elements to his military science fiction that are subtle.  There is a negotiation to free hostages, the use of information, espionage, small unit tactics, and politics which adds more than you may find in other military science fiction.  I also like that there is a bit of naturalism to describe the alien worlds which Lieutenant Leary visits.  In addition, one of the characters, Adele Munday has a background as a librarian which is pleasing to me.  A relaxing read with a bit of wonder.

I read a bit more of The Fusion Marketing Bible.  I have been reading about blogs.  Blogs rank high in search because most blogs are updated weekly or daily.  This means Wordpress.com which can also function as a content management system tends to get higher ranking in search engines than static web pages.

Jean-Paul Laurens, Faust

Daily Thoughts 06/04/2014

This morning, I read a bit more of the Fusion Marketing Bible.  Lon Safko is describing Cost of Customer Acquisition COCA, and Return on Investment two common acronyms that are used in justifying business expenses.  I also read more of War and Gold. Kwasi Kwarteng is describing General MacArthur's occupation of Japan after World War II.

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.  I also checked the displays.  I also started working on a small display of Maya Angelou's books.  We recently put a short summary of her life on website.

The book, Are Librarians Obsolete by Mark Y. Herring came in for me to read.  I also spent some time looking at the collection management sheet for patron requests at the reference desk.

There is an Excel computer class in the lab tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Daily Thoughts 06/03/2014

The Yellow Jacket, William Paxton, 1907

Daily Thoughts 06/03/2014

On the way to work, I read some more of The Fusion Marketing Bible. I am reading about the differences between digital media, social media which is two way, and traditional media.  I also read a little more of War and Gold.  I learned that Nazi Germany had been borrowing money for its military many years before World War II started.

This morning, I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library.  I also checked the displays and gift books. Two books came in for me to read while I was out Capital in the Twenty First Century by Thomas Piketty and The Sea Without a Shore by David Drake which is military science fiction.

I brought in a bag of books from the convention and added it to the cart of books which our director had brought back from the convention.  It is a very nice selection of new material.  I am waiting for the boxes of books from the convention.  I packed a box and the director packed a box from Book Expo America of new material to be added to the collection.  Our boxes came in today.

I had the Brown Bag Nonfiction Book Club today.  We discussed A Walk In the Woods by Bill Bryson and On The Edge: The Art of High Impact Leadership by Alison Levine.  The next book club book which we are going to discuss is Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America by Russell Shorto.

There are two computer classes tonight, a Beginning Microsoft Word class and a Fundamentals of Computer Operations Class.  There is also a Housing Workshop tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. put together by Westchester Residential Oppportunities.

The latest Bookpage came in for June.

On the way home, I read some more of The Fusion Marketing Bible.  Lon Safko is describing the process of linking different media together to spread your message.  For example, we automatically post what we put on Facebook for the library page to our Twitter Page.  Another example is that we take events from our calendar on our website and post them to Facebook.

The book War and Gold is quite revealing because it shows the politics behind many decisions about how nations lend money.  I am reading about the Marshall Plan which is partially about making sure that countries in Europe did not become communist.  It was also about creating a Pax Americana.

(Georg Pauli, Evening Reading, 1884)

Daily Thoughts 06/02/2014

This morning, I checked the library Twitter and Facebook pages.  I also spent some time looking at the bestseller lists.

We need diverse books Tumblr page. http://weneeddiversebooks.tumblr.com/

I read some more of War and Gold this morning.  I am reading about the New York and London as the financial capitals of the world at the turn of the century. The book is progressing steadily into World War I where financial leadership shifts from London to New York.  There are also some interesting bits about John Maynard Keynes.

I also read a bit more of The Fusion Marketing Bible.  Lon Safko reminds us that we should have a purpose for our social meda.  Right now, I like to think that there is a two fold purpose for our Twitter and Facebook pages which is to increase program attendance and advocate for how wonderful the library is.

Roses in Glass, 1831, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller
Daily Thoughts 06/01/2014

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of War and Gold by Kwasi Kwarteng.  I am reading about the idea of a central bank for a country that issues paper money in relation to the gold standard.  The book is very much a popular history of finance.  There is a section of black and white photographs, appendinx, notes, bibliography, index, acknowledgements, and list of cited websites.

I started reading The Fusion Marketing Bible Fuse Traditional Media, Social Media, and Digital Media to Maximize Your Marketing by Lon Safko today.
