Daily Thoughts 10/31/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading The Pharaoh's Treasure The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.  The history of papyrus covers much of the history of writing, scrolls, and books.  This book also has information on Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Christian libraries as well as the library of Alexandria.

It also describes how papyrus was grown on huge plantations in Egypt.  I found it to be a fascinating book.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I spent some time looking up new travel books released in October, November, and December.  The 2020 travel books are coming out now.

Yesterday, I spent some time looking at holiday books for cooking and crafts.

There is a Halloween Cookies event today in the community room from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

We are continuing to work on shifting the new books.

I spent some time looking at books in the mezzanine.

Yesterday I made a few suggestions for the website.

Seated Allegorical Figure of Divine Wisdom, Carlo Maratti, 1674-1677

Daily Thoughts 10/23/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading The Importance of Small Decisions by Michael J. O'Brien, R. Alexander Bentley, and William A. Brock.  This book is about how to make small decisions.  The last part of the book focuses on fake news and the impact of false information.  The book describes how small decisions have big impacts, because the effects of decisions often compound over time for money and social consequences.

I also finished reading Hipster Death Rattle by Richie Narvaez.  This was an enjoyable mystery with many plot twists.  The setting in Williamsburg was enjoyable to read about.  Richie Narvaez is from Williamsburg.  I am looking forward to his coming to read from his mystery and discuss gentrification on November 14, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Public Library.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I checked some of the books in the mezzanine.  I looked over some shifting of books in the main floor collection.

I discussed choosing books to be put in the mezzanine from the oversize collection.  I also spent some time looking over oversize material in the 500s and 600s.

I discussed a holiday wreathe program for December with a local artist.

The Student, Charles Green, 1881

Daily Thoughts 10/18/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I read some of Hipster Death Rattle by Richie Narvaez.  I like that people act badly.  They smoke things, drink too much, and cause their neighbors trouble.  I also like that the villain is cutting down hipsters in Brooklyn.  There is some very dark humor and the descriptions of Williamsburg are accurate.  This book has a unique style.

I also read some of The Importance of Small Decisions by Michael J. O'brien, R. Alexander Bentley, and William Brock.  This book explains how and why small decisions can make a difference.  Part of this is about how small decisions can compound over time like eating out or choosing to take specific actions at work.  The book is surprisingly practical.  It is by the MIT Press.

I checked the shelves in the mezzanine.

We worked on shifting on the main floor.  We are in the 700s.  I also did a little bit of shelf reading.

I worked on two orders of books.

I read the latest New York Times Bestseller list and the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list.

Last night I read Infinity A Graphic Guide by Brian Clegg and Oliver Pugh.  I enjoyed reading the book because it made math interesting.  There are a lot of different ideas about infinity in this book from a variety of sources.  It describes math from many different cultures, India, Greece, Italy, Germany, France, England, other places.

I checked the displays and the gift books this morning.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading Introducing Capitalism A Graphic Guide By Dan Cryan, Sharron Shatil & Pietro.  I like this series.  All of the book are informative and easy to read.  The illustrations in black and white are well done.  There are opinions from the left, right, and center about capitalism as a system.  It makes for interesting reading.

I also finished looking through Hack Your Journal, Stay Organized & Record Everything That Matters With One Notebook.  There are over 40 layouts for organizing different activities.  It is a book that is both practical and artistic at the same time.  I like the lettering which is used in the book.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this afternoon.

This morning, I was at the Kings Highway Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.  They are the first branch in Brooklyn with a Best Buy Teen Computer Center.  We spent time looking at the different computers.  They had a dozen hewlett packards and four MacIntosh computers.  \

There was also a sound studio with a midi keyboard and drums.  There was a drawing tablet and cameras and a variety of other electronics like a makerbot.  It was a combination of makerspace and computer lab.  I liked seeing the setting.

We are planning on applying for the Best Buy Grant.  We are also planning for a teen lab and maker space of our own at the Mount Vernon Public Library.

I checked the gift books and the displays when I got back.

People continued to shift books while I was out.

I read a copy of the Times Literary Supplement and the New York Review of Books.

Daily Thoughts 10/07/2019

I had a challenging day today.  My computer crashed last night.  I am bringing it in to the shop tomorrow.  My car also had to be fixed.  So first the car got fixed, now I can fix the computer.

Right now, I am in the public library writing on my computer.

I had a chance to look at my email, check Facebook and Twitter and do a few things with the computer.

I of course read some at the Laundromat from Philosophy A Graphic Guide.  I enjoyed reading about Descartes and Voltaire.

Daily Thoughts 10/06/2019

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading The Disordered Mind What Unusual Brains Tell Us About Ourselves by Eric R. Kandel.  I found this to be a fascinating book because the author uses a mix of brain science and psychology to describe how the brain malfunctions in different ways.  He hopes to see a time when psychology becomes more scientific because it draws more on the science of how the brain works.

Eric R. Kandel describes many examples where peoples don't work because of accident or genetics and then describes how these problems illuminate human brain function.

This is a popular science book by an academic writer.  It is illustrated has an index, notes, and illustration credits.

I read some more of Philosophy a Graphic Guide.  I rather liked the brief comments on inductive and deductive reasoning as well as Occam's Razor.
