Daily Thoughts 12/2/2010

I read some of Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson which is a fantasy novel on the train to work.  It is very enjoyable.

I also looked at furniture; laptop tables, chairs, and shelving.  I rather like the Librastack system which is coming out by Demco . http://www.demcointeriors.com/images/pdf/products-shelving/librastack-shelving_tear.pdf

The lady who requests books for the book mobile came in to ask for books for seniors.  She comes in with a list once a month.  There are usually several classics.  This time we had The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  The bookmobile is funded by the library system.

We are going to have a lady from the system come in twice a week to work with the designated central collections.  It might help a bit.

I also am thinking about fundraising.  I learned that the cuts in staffing were a stop gap measure to fill in the $180,000 dollars my library owns until the end of the year to the city.  Once the new year begins, we are going to have another $435,000 in cuts.  This is going to be very hard.  It will cut everything to the bare minimum.  Our budget would go back to 3.5 million. This is a very significant cut.
