I spent some time looking through the New York Area Startups website. http://newyork.areastartups.com/ for publishing startups. I thought this site was very interesting http://fictionaut.com/ which is a shared writing platform. Most of the startups are kind of hard to figure out; their names don't match what they do. It is important to have a name that matches with what you are doing.
I am following NBM on Goodreads now. NBM is an independent producer of graphic novels. I rather like their style. http://www.nbmpub.com/
