Daily Thoughts 06/30/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Mastermind today.  I am reading about how we focus attention.  In Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock discusses the difference between seeing and observing with Watson.  He is talking about attention and how we focus our attention.  It is natural for the mind to wander from thing to thing.

I read a little bit more of Hear My Sad Story.  I am reading about the ballad of Omie Wise and the ballad of Tom Dooley both are bloody stories of love gone wrong.

Self-portrait with a Sketch Book - Rembrandt
Self Portrait With a Sketch Book, Rembrandt, Unknown

Daily Thoughts 06/29/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I enjoyed reading The Thirteen Clocks by James Thurber.  It is a story written as a fairy tale for children.  There is a whimsical, nonsensical quality to it.

I checked the displays and the gift books.  I signed up a few more people for the Adult Summer Reading Program.  I put in a few patron requests for books.

I am organizing my desk a little bit.

I am looking at the book, Hear My Sad Story The True Tales That Inspired Stagolee, John Henry and Other Traditional American Folksongs by Richard Polenberg.

I changed the displays today.  It is National Culinary Arts Month and National Ice Cream Month in July.

I also put out the new Bookpage.

I am wearing an Adult Summer Reading shirt which says Exercise Your Mind, READ.

I read some of Hear My Sad Story.  I learned about the origin of the songs St. Louis Blues, Stagolee, and Frankie and Johnny.  All are tragic.  The author is only describing songs with a considerable amount of documented history.

Book and Guitar - Juan Gris
Book and Guitar, Juan Gris, 1925

Daily Thoughts 06/23/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I finished reading The View from the Cheap Seats.  Sometimes Neil Gaiman can be a little more than creepy for some people.  Some of his ideas have a Halloween quality to them which really doesn't bother me, but gets to other people.  He often writes about death and even faked the death of his wife to write a number of articles on how she died.  The book was very entertaining.  It makes me want to read The Thirteen Clocks by James Thurber.  Also, Neil Gaiman wrote about some authors like Terry Pratchett and Lord Dunsany who I like reading and Charles Vess who does does beautiful illustration.

I also read some more of the Walkable City.  I am reading about how trees make cities more attractive and safer.

I checked the gift books and the displays.  I also checked out the book, Mastermind How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes by Maria Konnikova today.  I am using it as part of an Adult Summer Reading Book   Club.  I sent in some more content for flyers to our designer today.  I also printed more flyers.

I have a copy of Publishers Weekly to read.

I am also getting ready for the Adult Board Games Night tonight.  We are getting ready for the Adult Summer Reading launch this Monday.

There is a Beginning Microsoft Excel Class tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This afternoon I had a meeting with Davidson Titles who are specialty distributor for libraries.  I ordered books for the central library district from them today.

On the way home, I read some more of The View from the Cheap Seats. Neil Gaiman is writing about introductions he did for books of stories by H.G. Wells, H.P. Lovecraft, Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Allen Poe, Dracula, and G.K. Chesterton.

I also read some more of Walkable City.  I am reading about bicycles in the city.  There are some interesting ideas about bicycle commuting and bike lans.

Daily Thoughts 06/19/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of The View from the Cheap Seats this morning.  I am reading about Neil Gaiman and comics.  I learned that Neil Gaiman started as a journalist, then moved into writing comics.  There is a very nice introductory speech for the 2003 Eisner Awards as well as the 2004 Kurtzman awards for comics.  Neil Gaiman does a good job describing why comics are art.

I read the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, Patience.  It is a time travel story where a man makes a mistake in his younger years and goes back to make things right, but ends up doing some very strange things.

I read some more of Walkable City today.  I am reading about the need for an integrated parking plan for on street parking, off street parking, residential parking, and parking garages.  The author describes how metered parking revenues can be used to improve repairs to streets, street lights, and signs.

Daily Thoughts 06/12/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I am on the final chapter of The Industries of the Future.  I am reading about how the geography of technology will change.  In Africa, for example, the introduction of cell phones allowed people to leapfrog ahead with technology completely avoiding landlines.  There is another phenomenon which is happening, startups are starting be more widely distributed around the world.  It is becoming easier to a technology company in Israel or North Carolina instead of silicon valley for example.  Also, with online access, people can work from home.

I started reading The View from the Cheap Seats by Neil Gaiman.  I especially like the article on P.5 through P.15, Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading and Daydreaming: The The Reading Agency Lecture.
