Daily Thoughts 03/31/2017

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

I read the book, Normal by Warren Ellis last night.  It is a very short novel about futurism.  The main character goes crazy because he has been looking into the abyss of what the future might be for too long.  He ends up in an asylum for futurists.  Then it gets truly strange with weird technology, conspiracy theory, spooky people, and madness.  It is very entertaining and bizarre.  The book is very short.  It can be finished in one sitting.  Warren Ellis writes graphic novels in addition to novels.  I especially liked his writing for the comic book, Transmetropolitan.

April is National Poetry Month.

I spent some time looking through the 600s today.

I checked out the book, James Baldwin, Collected Essays.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also made some notes from my email on the central library status.

I read the New York Daily News which they were handing out at the train station for free.  It is a local paper.

I checked the displays and the gift books.

April is National Mental Wellness Month.  I am doing a display on this subject tomorrow.

I put in some orders for new books today.

I read a copy of Publishers Weekly and the New York Times Book Review.  I put the latest Bookpage out as well.

I had a variety of miscellaneous tasks to take care of as well.  Hopefully, I will be able to able to interview someone for a librarian position next week.

There is a social media class tonight from 5;30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the computer lab.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.


I read the latest New York Times on the subway to work.

I checked the displays and the gift books today.  I put in several orders of books.  I also put in an order for some e-books.

I worked a little bit on statistics as well.

Today, there is a class on On Organizing Files and Folders for your desktop from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the computer lab.

I spent some time working on the 500s.  I also prepared a list for the 600s.

I placed a hold on the book, New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson.

I finished reading Fast Food Nation The Dark Side of the All American Meal by Eric Schlosser.  This is a muckraking expose of the fast food industry.  It is mainly focused on hamburgers and the cattle industry.  The last part tells how McDonald's and other fast food chains are spreading worldwide.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I checked the gift books and the displays.  I spent some time looking at the definitions of what Central Book Aid is for New York Libraries.  http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/clda/index.html

I put in a few orders for new books.  I also have more orders to work on.

The Crochet Group met today in the fiction room from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..  There was a very nice crowd.

I spent some time working on scheduling today for the year.  I am working on putting together a schedule for the next several months.  I have to examine my programming more closely.

I have a copy of the New York Times Book Review and the Times Literary Supplement to read.

There is a Fundamentals of Computers class tonight and a Beginning Microsoft Word class in the computer lab.

I read some more of Fast Food Nation on the way home.  I am reading about the dangers of working in the meatpacking industry.

I read some more of Fast Food Nation on the way to work.  I learned that Ray Kroc the founder of McDonald's new Walt Disney personally.  There is a certain irony in this.  McDonald's has some of the qualities of Disneyland.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I spent some time working on programming.  We are working on a grant for the Mount Vernon Arts Iniative.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading Small Data on the way to work.  It has a method to it which is focused on collecting lots of personal information and interviewing people to create a qualitative picture of how people use a product.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.  I also did a little work with the collection focused on short stories.  I am working on the computer classes for the next several months.

There is a seminar this afternoon on customer service from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30p.m.

There is a Smart Phone class this evening in the computer lab from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In May we are showing a film on mental health, May is National Mental Wellness Month.  I am planning on doing a display on mental health in May.

I got the sign in sheets for April for the computer classes ready.

On the way to work, I read some more of Small Data.  Martin Lindstrom is describing how he visits different countries and looks for what people desire.

I printed up some more flyers.  I also worked a little bit on ordering.  I have a lot more work on programming to do.

There is a program tonight, Suffrage, The Fight for Women's Rights from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Grace Greene Baker Community Room.

In addition, there is the Fundamentals of Computers Class and the Microsoft Word class tonight.

Last night, I finished reading Arkwright by Allen Steele.  I enjoyed the book, it had a satisfying ending.  The ship makes it to a distant world and a colony is built there.

I watched the instructional video for this week for the Management of Technology Class.  I also wrote a brief summary about seeking a grant for computers for a teen area. for the Budget and Finance class.

On the way to work, I read some of Arkwright by Allen Steele.  This is a story with a what if? premise.  What if a successful golden age science fiction writer had established a foundation to build an interstellar spaceship.  It is hard science fiction which extrapolates from existing possibilities.

I have been watching some Star Trek the Next Generation to relax at night.  I watched the first season.  I find Gene Roddenberry's message inspiring.

I read a copy of Booklist and I put the book The Arkwright by Allen M. Steele on hold which is science fiction.

I read some of On Managing Yourself on the way to work.  One of the articles is Management Time: Who's Got the Monkey by William Oncken, Jr. and Donald L. Wass.  It is one of the most read articles in Harvard Business Review.

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.

I finished reading Beyond Competitive Advantage How to Solve the Puzzle of Sustaining Growth While Creating Value by Todd Zenger.  I liked at the end of the book how Todd Zenger describes that people need to adjust their strategy on whether they are  centralized or decentralized.   A lot of this book discusses opposing strategies like whether to make or buy different products.  The author seems to do a good job of describing how to be flexible in making decisions.

I checked the displays and the gift books.  I also worked a little bit on ordering.  I have a few lists to work on for Bookletters including new fiction, new nonfiction, and new dvds.

I checked out the book, Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads On Managing Yourself.

On the way to work, I read some more of Beyond Competitive Advantage.  I am reading about corporate deception.  The author is describing strategic lemons, moral hazards where management looks after itself at the expense of corporate success, and other ways people tend to make corporations appear more valuable than they are.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.  I put in a banner for Women's History Month.

I read through a copy of Bookpage today.  I also looked at the New York Times Bestseller list and the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list.

Right now, I am in the computer lab.  I helped some people with scanning some documents.

I sent in a wish list for some things I am hoping will happen.

We have a new director today, Ms. Thompson.

I read a copy of the Times Literary Supplement.  I also made sure the monthly calendar for adults was put in place.

There is a Gmail class tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 op.m.

I wrote my monthly report for March.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also checked the displays and the gift books.  Today is the first day of Women's History month.

I am in the computer lab now.  I did a little more work with programming today.  I am trying to think of something for National Library Week.

I spent a little time working with a colleague on ordering for new books.

On the way to work, I read some of Beyond Competitive Advantage.  I am reading about how successful companies create their own theories to gain advantage.  The author uses a diagram from Walt Disney to describe the vision of the founder and how it led to sustained competitive advantage.

I also read some more of The Existentialist Cafe Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails.   This author is both a descripton of existentialism and phenomenology and a kind of personal memoir on how the philosophy was part of Sarah Bakewell's life.

I am looking at the Urban Librarians Unite conference.  The teacher for my Management of Technology Course, Carson Block, will be there on April 7, 2017.  https://www.urbanlibrariansconference.org/

I am having some people check for damaged items in the collection.

I read some more of Beyond Competitive Advantage on the way home.  I learned about a new concept in management, cross-sight the ability to see synergies and assets across a corporation.
