I read some more of How to Be An Antriacist on Overdrive. I am reading about how the ideas about racism which we have today are closely tied with the slave trade from Africa.

I spent some time talking to the Complete Count Committee for the City of Mount Vernon on Zoom.  We had a meeting from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

I finished reading The US Armed Forces Officer Essays on Leadership, Command, Oath, and Service Identity by Richard M. Swain and Albert C. Pierce.  This is an excellent overview of the moral and ethical underpinnings of the United States military foces.

I read some more of How To Be An Antiracist.  I am reading about Ibram X.  Kendi's parents.

I started reading How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi.  In his view, a lot of racism comes from specific policies designed to suppress and discriminate against racial groups.  He views the argument as between racist and antiracist thinking.

I contacted a few people about a part-time position with the Complete Count Committee of the City of Mount Vernon, New York.  There is going to be phone banking for the census for the City of Mount Vernon.  To register go to bit.ly/2Z8cPNj  The time is from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 8, 2020.  We are also meeting on Monday to pick up tablets for the census.

There is a plan to make a community garden at the library.  We are going to be seeking volunteers and equipment for the library.

I read the book, The Network Effect by Martha Wells which is about a rogue cyborg security unit.  It is entertaining science fiction.  There are a lot of ideas about hacking and computers in this story combined with action and intrigue.  It is the fifth book in the series.  I have liked reading all the books in the series.

I finished reading LaGuardia  last night written by Nnedi Okorafor, drawn by Tana Ford, colored by James Devlin, and lettered by Sal Cipriano.  This is a beautifully put together graphic novel.  The colors are striking and the lettering is wonderful.  It has an interesting cast of humans and aliens.  It mixes the setting of Nigeria and New York peopled with aliens and human beings.  It is a story of conflict about alien immigration and visitation to earth.  I like the symbolism and the relevance to the issues today about immigration.  I also like the talking plant aliens.  This book was a lot of fun to read.  It is a science fiction graphic novel.

I also watched another episode of Chemistry In Our Universe on Kanopy.  I am learning about large numbers as well as chemistry is primarily about very small parts of nature, atoms and molecules.

I spent a little time thinking about how we would do the Adult Summer Reading as an online program.

I finished reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.  It was a mix of stories and essays focus on ecology and the Native American tradition.  The author is a botanist and spends a lot of time talking about peoples relationship with plants and the natural world.  I very much enjoyed reading the book.  It would be of interest to people interest in botany and ecology.  The author successfully ties her spiritual and tribal traditions with science.

I read some more of Braiding Sweetgrass.  I read about how amphibians are being damaged by civilization.  A kind of collateral damage.  I find the spirituality to be interesting in the book.  It has a very strong ecological ethic.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Braiding Sweetgrass on the way to work today.  I am reading about restoration ecology and what it means to have a river reborn.  There are also some ideas about how to live with plants in an ecological way.

I finished writing my grant today.  I worked together with a colleague.  I would write my piece, then she would edit it.  Then I would look it over and put the grant pieces in.  It is for the IMLS CARES Act.

I also did a little more research for the census and posted some more Public Service Announcements.

I put in an order for the database, the African American Experience.

I have a list of organizations to check for the census which I got this morning.

I am also planning on calling people for the Community Based Organizations committee which is a subcommittee of the Mount Vernon Complete Count Committee for Census.

I am going to work today.  I have to work on the IMLS CARES Act grant today.

We spent some time finishing up the narrative and starting on the budget for the IMLS CARES Act.
 I contacted a few people about it.

I called two people about the Mount Vernon Complete Count Committee for the Census.  I also sent some material over.

I spent some time reading on my smart phone.  I read some more of Braiding Sweetgrass.  I am reading about ecological restoration focusing on salmon and sweetgrass.   There are a lot of very interesting threads that run through this book.  I like the discussion of bringing back Native American languages and how it affects a sense of place.
