Daily Thoughts 09/24/2017

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also read some of New Routes To Library Success 100+ Ideas from Outside the Stacks by Elisabeth Doucett.  This book is about how to get ideas from organizations outside the library.  Elisabeth Doucett was a business manager before she was a librarian.  There is a gray area between libraries and other organizations.  The author starts by looking at ideas from entrepreneurship by visiting a company called Gelato Fiasco.  There is a list of questions from the visit at the end of the chapter as well as a list of ideas.

I did my assignment for Organization and Personnel Management today.  It was focused on financial information for libraries.

On a personal level, I often visit bookstores and attend publishing events because they are helpful in understanding how the book industry works.

Today is the beginning of the Rebel Reader Twitter Tournament http://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/bannedbooksweek/rebelreaderatyourlibrary
where we post about banned books.  Banned Books Week is from September 24 through September 30.

I finished reading Great By Choice by Jim Collins and Morten T. Hansen.  This book is about what makes a company a leader in its industry over a period of many years.  The authors describe a systematic consistent pace, incremental research patterns, the ability to capitalize on luck, the ability to overcome disaster, and thriving in uncertainty as factors in being leading companies.  The companies like Amgen, Microsoft, and Southwest Airlines have lots of research to confirm the authors statements.  There are also notes and an index.  This book has sections where they compare the books Great By Choice and Good To Great which are both about being outstanding companies.  Consistency seems to play a huge factor in this book.

I also checked the purchase alerts for books on hold.

I listened to the lecture for next week for the online class for Organization and Personnel Administration.  We are working on polices and strategic planning.

I spent a little time cutting and pasting some information into the Arts Westchester Grant form for Arts Alive 2018.
