Paperweight - Louis Comfort Tiffany
Paperweight, Louis Comfort Tiffany, 1902

Daily Thoughts 07/29/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I placed an interlibrary loan on The Purpose Driven Library Finding Your Path to Survival, Success, and Growth by John J. Huber and Steven V. Potter.

On the way to work, I read some more of The Planet Remade.  I am reading about how it is possible to use large airplanes to seed the upper the atmosphere to make the world a little cooler.

I checked the displays and the gift books today.  I also printed up some flyers.

I am working on some programs for September.  We are gettting the dvd for To Begin The World Over Again: The Life of Thomas Paine which is a program from the American Library Association focusing on intellectual freedom.  We are also arranging for a coupon clipping program.

I spent some time learning Google Calendar.  I am finding it extremely easy to use.

I also checked out the book, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch which is science fiction.

I put in an order for new books today and looked at the latest New York Times Bestseller which comes in on my email on Fridays.

I like that Oliver Morton in his book  The Planet Remade cites the book, The Invasion of the Sea by Jules Verne as an early imagined example of geoengineering.

Interior with Young Man Reading - Vilhelm Hammershoi
Interior With Young Man Reading, Vilhelm Hammershoi, 1898

Daily Thoughts 07/27/2016

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library this morning.

Last night, I read the graphic novel The Imitation Game Alan Turing Decoded by Jim Ottaviani and Illustrated by Leland Purvis.  This is a biography of Alan Turing.  It describes his breaking of the nazi enigma code, early developments in computing and mathematics, and his tragic end.

I also read some more of The Planet Remade.  I am reading about climate systems and how heat and water are exchanged all over the world.

I spent a little time working on weeding this morning.

I also updated the CD Audiobooks list for Bookletters.

There is a Beginning Wordpress class tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tonight.

On the way home, I read Jacques Ferrandez The Stranger based on the Novel by Camus.  It is a graphic version of the novel.  I found the story to be quite nihilistic and dark.  There was a certain appeal to the senseless acts of the main character, Meursault who seems to be a kind of everyman in a rebellious sense.  I thought the translator Sandra Smith did a good job in bringing out the sense of hedonism, sexuality, crminality, and randomness in the novel.  The brutality of the law and society is as strong in this story as the crime.  The style of the story is intriguing but not what I am used to.  This graphic novel is meant for adults and has some strong content.

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

On the way to work, I read some more of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Today we are discussing Mastermind How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes by Maria Konnikova from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There is a computer class for 3D Printing today from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On the way home, I finished reading The Perfect Bet How Science and Math Are Taking the Luck Out of Gambling by Adam Kucharski.  Adam Kucharski asks the question are horseracing, poker, and lotteries purely games of chance?  He describes how increasing computerization changes betting.  We get to read about checkers programs, poker bots, and backgammon programs.  This is an excellent book for people who are interested in math, statistics, probability, betting, and odds.

Daily Thoughts 07/20/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I also checked the displays and the gift books.  I printed up a few flyers.

On the way to work, I read some of The Perfect Bet How Science and Math Are Taking the Luck Out of Gambling by Adam Kucharski.  It is an interesting book.  Gambling is related to the mathematics of probability.  People wanted to find out the best way to win at dice so they used math to figure out the odds.  Right now, I am reading about how people tried to win at roulette by trying to understand the physics of the roulette table.

I spent a little time looking at policies for lending out library hotspots.

I also printed some samples of job descriptions for a Librarian I position.

I stayed for the Mount Vernon Public Library board meeting.  Part of our union contract was certified today which means the staff gets a little more money.   In addition, I was confirmed as a Librarian III at the meeting, a step up from Librarian II which was satisfying.  I left at 9:00 p.m..  Most of the discussions were administrative in nature.

On the way home, I learned a little bit about lottery syndicates and blackjack card counting from reading The Perfect Bet.  The book is not so much about the science, but the concepts behind probability, statistics, and methods of winning bets.

Daily Thoughts 07/19/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I am enjoying reading Draplin Design Co. Pretty Much Everything.  Aaron Draplin's life story is interesting.  There is a lot about snowboarding, rock music, and living life as an ordinary person-- working as a dishwasher and cook in Alaska, and going to school.  His design seems to reflect the every day objects he uses in his life.  This makes the book relevant and easy to identify with.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I read the August Baker and Taylor Forecast.  I placed a hold on Jerusalem by Alan Moore.

I ordered some prepublication books today.

I also spent some time in the computer lab.

On the way home, I finished reading Draplin Design Co. Pretty Much Everything by Aaron James Draplin.  I like his aesthetics.  They very much remind of older industrial America and they have a sense that reminds me a little bit of garage sales and flea markets and conventions.

Daily Thoughts 07/14/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I read some more of Infomocracy on the way to work.  The main characters are members of different political parties in the mini-democracy system. There are a few parties who have supermajority and have more worldwide influence.  It is an interesting take on the future of politics.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I also worked a little bit on weeding.

On the way home, I read some more of The Hound of the Baskervilles, I rather like the old fashioned sensibility of Arthur Conan Doyle.

I also read a little bit more of Infomocracy.  I rather like that the characters sneak around and are deceptive more than they are violent.  I also like the idea of the story partially centering on an earthquake.

I checked the Twitter and Facebook for the library.

I finished reading Mastermind How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes by Maria Konnikova.   I enjoyed reading it.  It makes me want to reread The Hound of the Baskervilles.  We are showing the film version with Jeremy Brett on July 27, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.  Mastermind is going to be done as a book club on Monday, July 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. as part of Adult Summer Reading

I checked the gift books and the displays today.

I am preparing to do some weeding this summer.  I am starting by generating some reports from Report Station.

I checked out The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle today.  Also, the book, Infomocracy by Malka Older came in for me to read.

I looked through two copies of Publishers Weekly.  I am looking at the June 15, 2016 Library Journal.

I have read five books so far as part of the Adult Summer Reading Program.

Today at 2:30 p.m. I am going to be meeting briefly with an African Drum instructor.  It was an interesting meeting.  His programs are intergenerational and he has taught at many of the local libraries.

There is an Intermediate HTML and CSS class tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the computer lab.   We are working on getting more of the laptops working for next week so we can have computer classes in the community room.  The 3D Printer class worked well last week.

Infomocracy has an interesting premise.  It is a post nationstate world where a giant company called the Information helps run thousands of mini-democracies.

Dante Gabrielle Rosetti, Portrait of Jane Morris, January 1873

Daily Thoughts 07/07/2016

I checked the library Twitter and Facebook this morning.

I finished reading Hear My Sad Story The True Tales that Inspired Stagolee, John Henry, and other Traditional American Folk Songs by Richard Polenberg on the train to work..  This book is a mix of history, lore, and music.  It is about American tragedy.  We learn about the sinking of the Titanic, the railroad and mine strikes, the boll weevil which destroyed the cotton industry, working on a chain gang, being a highwayman, and many other tragic American events.  The book is full of interesting tidbeis.  Leadbelly, the blues singer worked on a chain gang in a prison and Joe Hill was a Swedish immigrant.  This is a great book if you like history and folk music.  All of the stories are documented, there is an index, notes, and black and white photographs throughout the book.  Richard Polenberg is a professor at Cornell University. The style of the writing reminds me a little bit of Howard Zinn.  It is both populist and entertaining reading.

I checked the gift books and the displays this morning.

I looked through a stack of old Publishers Weekly magazines and a copy of the Times Literary Supplement.  I placed a hold on the book, Infomocracy by Malka Ann Older which is science fiction.
